Where California Cuisine Was Born
Berkeley doesn't just feed you. It makes you think about where your food came from, who grew it, and what it means to eat well and eat ethically. That's been true for over fifty years.
The California cuisine movement that Berkeley launched has since reshaped food culture worldwide. The philosophy is elegantly simple: use the best local, seasonal, and sustainably grown ingredients, and cook them with skill and respect. It sounds obvious now because Berkeley made it obvious.
Beyond Chez Panisse and its many alumni restaurants, Berkeley has a thriving food culture shaped by UC Berkeley's international student body. The Gourmet Ghetto neighborhood anchors the city's food identity, while Shattuck Avenue and Telegraph Avenue offer dining for every budget and craving.
Farm-to-Table Birthplace
The California cuisine movement began here. Many of the Bay Area's most celebrated restaurants are run by Chez Panisse alumni who carry the torch of local, seasonal, ingredient-forward cooking.
Cheese & Artisan Food
Berkeley's Cheese Board Collective — a worker-owned cooperative since 1967 — is a food institution. Their pizza and cheese selection are legendary.
International Diversity
UC Berkeley's global student population has created an extraordinarily diverse food scene. Japanese, Korean, Indian, Ethiopian, Thai, and Mexican cuisines are all represented at high quality.
Coffee Culture Pioneer
Berkeley has been a specialty coffee city since the 1960s. Peet's Coffee was founded here in 1966, predating Starbucks and influencing the entire American coffee industry.
